But it didn't work! The brochure didn't get any clients at all. I just didn't understand why.
The more I tried to get clients the more it seemed to work against me. In fact the whole experience was very disappointing. It was just after I graduated that I did my first advertising. I was so excited and proud, because I was really going to make a difference to people, and have some income from what I loved doing the most....Massage Therapy.
But...nobody made any bookings from my brochures. I felt really feeling frustrated and confused, because I'd wasted all that time with advertising that didn't work. I wracked my brains as to why it didn't work. Actually it was more like banging my head against a brick wall! Not to mention it was a complete waste of energy, time and money. I got my hopes up for nothing.
I was determined that with my expertise and abilities, (I trained at one of the best schools in the state) people would be really impressed at what I had studied and what my qualifications were, that they would call me. I thought I’d be getting appointments for sure. I made sure I had the phone turned up loud and the cell phone on all the time and had it with me constantly so I wouldn’t miss any calls.
I was so excited that finally I was getting myself ‘out there.’ I walked the footpaths of my local area, in the heat, and it took me about four days to distribute 100 flyers. It was hard work. Everyday I would go back home, tired, but excited, thinking “Wow! I wonder how many calls I’ll get today?”
After I distributed them I went home and waited.....
While I waited for the phone to ring, I would go into my massage room and make sure it was all ready for the abundance of clients. I made sure all the towels were arranged beautifully and clean. I double checked the music, and made sure I had plenty of oil. I even made mental notes to myself how I would conduct myself when my first client came......
I had only two enquiries and the third was a wrong number.
I was so confused and frustrated! Again! Why hadn’t it worked? I was a fully qualified Massage Therapist, specialising in all the things that people needed, and trained at the best school, so why weren’t people calling up to make appointments?
I was left feeling the ache of throwing money (I didn’t have) down the toilet. It was a huge blow especially considering it was a total financial loss. I was only seeing five clients a week at that stage and got wages from my part time job to pay my rent, because what I was earning from massage was just not enough. And had been happening for months, with not showing any signs of change. I desperately wanted 15 or 20 clients so I could comfortably live off my massage income.
It made me scared and not want to advertise my massage business anymore. But the catch was I had to advertise to actually get the clients in the first place, I was caught. And I was at a loss as to what to do.
No-one was able to help me. My college didn’t know how to help, and my association had absolutely nothing on successful marketing for massage therapists, so I couldn’t turn to them. I tired some 'non industry' specific things but they didn’t understand what massage therapy was like as a business, or understand me and I didn’t understand them. I got fed up with their 'sales pitch' all the time. I was really stuck. I wished desperately that someone could help me.
Then it happened......I understood why all those ads and marketing hadn't worked and so immediately changed what I was doing wrong.
I decided to apply my new knowledge and took the plunge again. I put my first NEW ad in the local paper. I hoped to God it would work. The ad went to print, the paper was distributed and bam! Clients! In fact my phone rang for days every fifteen minutes up to midnight with people wanting to book in. It was mind blowing! I went from scraping to find food money, to having appointments booked in for the next three weeks and growing. I had to pinch myself constantly.
I was starting to see a regular influx of 20 clients a week consistently from that one ad. I could hardly believe it! I went from making $250 per week to making almost $1000 per week from one advert, and instantly.
I then discovered the way to keep these clients coming back. The great thing was that those people came to see me for the entire length of my massage therapy business. From there it just got better. I quickly had to hire staff to cope with the demands of my every growing massage business because I couldn’t physically treat everyone who wanted to see me.
At that point I had the choice to stay at 20 clients a week, or expand my massage business to 40 clients and hire help. So I choose the latter…

But by year Two, I was where most Therapists where at year Ten.

By the beginning of year Three I was able to buy a new car from the money I earned from my massage business.
